6. 'A' to 'B'.
'BAD DRIVING IS LIKE BEGGING THAT EVERYBODY IS BETTER'.
The main purpose of the accelerator pedal is not always obvious; the first thought is making the car accelerate but this function is only half its duty. Its main objective is controlling the speed of a vehicle, which is vastly different. How does it perform this task? In short, it does not, you do it, you the driver.
The first duty of any driver is looking as far ahead as possible at all times. It is important understanding the difference between visibility and vision.
'Looking is important - seeing is essential'.
The movement of the accelerator pedal must be like oiled silk. It is essential to be able to drive slowly and a passenger must never know when you apply power or withdraw power. It should feel like an electric motor is powering your car. The constant 'on and off' of power concentrates your attention, enhances anticipation and keeps your mind and reflexes constantly alert. The brake pedal will rarely come into play. With practise you should be able to halt your car using judgement of speed and gears, NOT the brake pedal!
If a driver is not prepared to pay attention, look well in front and anticipate danger then the best braking system in the world will not save the day.
Simulate brake failure by pressing your right foot on the floor boards of your car underneath the brake pedal. Feel the panic as control is lost.
Always drive that little bit better than your last journey!
