8. JUNCTIONS.
'MANY CARS ARE DRIVEN WITH AUTHORITY AND, ALL TOO OFTEN, WITH LITTLE SKILL'.
Road junctions can be hazardous places even in good weather conditions. They will become less of a danger if drivers can muster just that little more patience, tolerance and understanding. For example, the first driver arriving at a junction should be granted priority over a driver arriving second especially if the first driver wishes to turn at right angles. A little magnanimity makes the day the more pleasant.
Probably the most important onus on a driver is arriving at a road junction at the correct speed. Be prepared and be concentrating well in advance of the junction. Never leave your braking to the last minute. Never arrive in neutral, always double de-clutch on each, successive down change. This teaching is especially critical if the road is icy.
Have you notices which way a driver is looking arriving at a junction? He should be looking to his right simply because that is the direction from which the danger traffic is approaching. The majority of drivers are looking left because it gives easier vision across to the other side of the road.
The majority of drivers always do the opposite of that which they should do: therefore, by doing the opposite of what you are doing now, immediately you become a 100% better driver. At a junction, what part of a car gives the exact information if or not it is moving?
While waiting at a junction, pay attention to your mirror; be prepared to move forward and, perhaps turn left if a vehicle is approaching too quickly from behind. Be sure to be IN GEAR and the hand brake off. Remember the three fields of vision!
